Around the World to Come Back Home

From the album, Around the World to Come Back Home.

A Heart Adrift

Liam had always been restless, even in his early twenties when he moved from the dry expanses of Santa Fe to the green, rain-soaked streets of Seattle. He was young, full of hope, and in love. Moving there wasn’t just about new beginnings, it was about the life he would build with Hannah. She had a wild streak that complemented his quiet ambition, and together they made their home in a little apartment on Capitol Hill. The city, with its coffee shops and music venues, seemed the perfect backdrop for their adventure. The Pacific Northwest offered misty mornings, endless trails, and nights that blurred between loud music and intimate conversations.

But as time passed, cracks began to form. They both grew in different directions—Liam was ready to plant roots, while Hannah was still chasing her own sense of freedom. She wanted more than what their quiet life could offer. The love they once shared seemed like a distant memory, eclipsed by her need for something that Liam couldn’t give. And then, just like that, she left him. No long conversation, no heated argument—just a simple note left on the kitchen table.

It broke him in a way that only first heartbreaks can. Seattle’s grey skies became even darker, and every corner of the city reminded him of her. For weeks, he stayed in the apartment, nursing a pain that felt endless. But one cold, rainy night, he decided he couldn't stay trapped in a place filled with so much history. So, he sold what little he had and bought a plane ticket. He didn’t know where he was headed, but he knew that he had to leave.

Thailand – Sun and Solitude

Liam’s first stop was Thailand, a country he’d never thought much about before. Bangkok hit him like a sensory overload—bright colors, chaotic streets, and a humid heat that clung to his skin. But it was on the islands, beneath the palms of Koh Samui, that he felt the weight of Seattle slowly begin to lift.

There, he met an Israeli woman named Maya. She was as untethered as he was, traveling without a plan or end date, just seeing where the road took her. They spent long days on the beach, diving into the turquoise waters, and long nights sipping beers in seaside bars, exchanging stories. Maya had a carefree spirit that reminded Liam of Hannah but without the weight of the past. She was temporary, and they both knew it.

One night, as they lay under the stars, she turned to him and said, "You're searching for something. But it’s not here. It’s in you." Her words struck a chord, and as much as he enjoyed their time together, he knew it was time to move on.

Costa Rica – Nature’s Embrace

Next, Liam found himself in the lush jungles of Costa Rica. There, life slowed down. The air was thick with moisture, and the sound of birds and the rush of waterfalls became his constant companions.

It was in Monteverde that he met Camille, a French backpacker who was studying tropical ecology. They explored the cloud forests together, hiking deep into the jungle, where the world felt untouched by time. Camille had a way of speaking about the earth like it was a living, breathing thing, and Liam found peace in her perspective. They spent lazy afternoons swimming in hidden waterfalls and evenings talking about life, love, and the future.

But as serene as it was, Liam felt the call of the road again. Camille understood. She gave him a small seashell as a token of their time together, and with a soft kiss goodbye, he boarded a plane to his next destination.

Ireland – Ghosts of the Past

Ireland was colder, windier, and full of history. In Dublin, Liam found a pub on every corner, each filled with stories, laughter, and song. The streets were lined with cobblestones, and the air always smelled faintly of rain.

In one such pub, he met Isla, an Englishwoman with fiery red hair and a wit to match. They connected instantly, sharing a mutual love for literature and old Irish folklore. Isla took him to the Cliffs of Moher, where the wind roared and the sea below crashed violently against the rocks. It felt like the edge of the world.

For a moment, Liam thought maybe he could stop running. Maybe here, with Isla, he could settle. But the ghosts of his past still haunted him, and though Isla’s charm was undeniable, his heart was not ready. He said goodbye once more, promising to keep in touch but knowing he never would.

Scotland – Winds of Change

Liam’s journey continued north to Scotland. The rugged landscape of the Highlands felt raw and untamed, much like the storm inside him. In the small town of Inverness, he met Fiona, a local with a thick accent and a heart full of mischief. They hiked the rolling hills, exploring ancient castles and chasing the myths of the Loch Ness monster.

Fiona was bold, unafraid of life’s uncertainties. She taught him how to laugh again, how to let go of the pain that clung to him. But despite the lightness she brought, Liam knew his journey wasn’t over. Scotland had shown him beauty and resilience, but the road still stretched ahead, calling him forward.

Spain – Fire and Passion

Spain was a world of vibrant colors and fiery passion. In Barcelona, Liam wandered through the narrow streets, marveling at the architecture of Gaudi and the energy of the city. It was there he met Rosa, a dancer whose movements were as fluid as the music she performed to.

Rosa brought him into a world of flamenco, late-night tapas, and moonlit walks along the beach. She lived life with a fervor that both captivated and exhausted him. Spain was intoxicating, but it also showed Liam something crucial—he was chasing shadows, never letting himself rest long enough to feel grounded.

New York City – The Final Test

Liam’s next stop was New York City, a metropolis that never slept. The lights were blinding, the pace relentless. There, he met Sarah, a journalist who saw the world through a lens of cynicism and curiosity. They explored the city together, from the dizzying heights of skyscrapers to the gritty, underground jazz clubs.

New York was a test. Could Liam survive the chaos, or would it break him? In the end, Sarah showed him that he didn’t need to be anywhere special to heal—he just needed time.

Back to Santa Fe – Homecoming

After months of traveling, Liam returned to Santa Fe. The mountains, the dry air, the familiar landscape—it all felt like home. The journey had taken him far from where he started, but he realized that the place he truly needed to heal had been here all along.
